Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is the cornerstone of the Melissa brand and its key to their economic development. Melissa believes in the need to protect natural resources for future generations in order to create a harmony within business, society and the environment. Its sustainability efforts focus on factory production processes that minimize damage to the environment. Melissa products are created from mono-materials which can be easily disassembled and recycled. All solid, liquid and gas residues from the production process are dealt with in-house and do not leave the factory without being properly treated. Melissa firmly adheres to its zero waste policy. Its jelly shoes are 100% recyclable, and all overstock styles are recycled into the next season’s collections.
Melissa is a proud sponsor of the book “Haverá a Idade das Coisas Leves: Design and Sustainable Development, Senac 2005”, organized by Thierry Kazazian. This book discusses Eco Design, providing an overview of the serious problems facing the environment and suggestions for long term solutions to many of these issues.
Sustainable development cannot be achieved without valuing one's employees. Melissa recognizes that its employees are an important asset to the company, thereby ensuring that their welfare is well taken care of, paying wages and offering benefits that are above the industry average.
Technology
At the frontier of footwear technology is Melissa, which boasts a 120 man strong research & development team that is dedicated to discovering new grounds in footwear technology. In 2007, Melissa developed the Melflex™ technology for injected thermoplastic. Melflex™ is a formula that provides Melissa’s shoes with improved elasticity, impermeability and resistance, thereby enabling its shoes to be molded to the shape of the consumer’s feet. This enables Melissa’s jelly shoes to provide extra comfort to the consumer’s foot. Its resistance and waterproof qualities also ensure that Melissa’s shoes are durable and long-lasting.
Melissa is continually marrying technology and design. Its latest improvement to the Melflex™ technology is the Velvet Melflex™ , which allows Melissa’s shoes to display both a matte and shiny surface simultaneously while maintaining the comfort and durability of its shoes.
